Cholesterol-lowering drugs tied to reduced glaucoma risk

Cholesterol-lowering drugs tied to reduced glaucoma risk
High cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of developing glaucoma, but a new study suggests taking statins to lower cholesterol helps to reduce this risk.
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, typically because pressure builds up inside the eye. The current study focused on the most common form, known as open-angle glaucoma, which starts with gradual loss of peripheral vision.
Researchers followed more than 136,000 healthy adults for over a decade, starting when they were 40 years old and had no signs of glaucoma. By the end of the study, 886 glaucoma cases were diagnosed.
People with any history of high cholesterol were 17 percent more likely to develop glaucoma, researchers report in JAMA Ophthalmology. And every 20 milligrams per deciliter of blood increase in total cholesterol was tied to a 7 percent increase in glaucoma risk.
In contrast, any statin use was associated with a 15 percent lower risk of glaucoma overall, the study found. And people who took statins for five or more years were 21 percent less likely to develop glaucoma than those who had never used the drugs.
“The potential mechanisms by which statins may lower the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma is by lowering intraocular pressure, which is a glaucoma risk factor; by helping to maintain adequate blood flow to the optic nerve and by strengthening neuroprotective mechanisms,” said lead study author Jae Hee Kang of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
“The relation with high cholesterol is not well understood but may be related to impaired blood flow to the optic nerve or to the exacerbation of neurodegenerative processes with aging,” Kang said by email.
Statins are typically prescribed to people with high cholesterol or a high risk for heart attacks or strokes. Side effects can include muscle pain, liver damage, upset stomach, elevated blood sugar and memory problems.
To explore the connection between statins and glaucoma, researchers examined data from three long-term studies of U.S. nurses and health professionals. All participants had regular eye exams and were periodically assessed for statin use or diagnosis of high cholesterol.
Among people who never used statins, 34 to 56 percent had high cholesterol.
High cholesterol was even more common among statin users, affecting 84 to 94 percent of people on the pills for up to two years and 96 to 99 percent of patients on statins for at least five years.
The effect of statins on glaucoma risk was most pronounced in older participants. People over 65 who used statins for at least five years were 30 percent less likely to develop glaucoma than individuals who never used these drugs, while people under 65 saw no risk reduction.
One limitation of the study is that researchers relied on participants to accurately recall and report any statin use or diagnosis of high cholesterol. Results from a study of predominantly white health professionals also may not reflect what would happen in other groups of people.
Even so, the results highlight the need for further research to explore whether statins might one day be prescribed to prevent glaucoma, which is not currently an approved use of these pills, said the co-author of an accompanying editorial, Dr. Yao Liu of the University of Wisconsin-Madison
“This study is important because glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can cause permanent vision loss” and for which there’s no cure, Liu said by email.
“The only way we currently know how to prevent glaucoma damage is by lowering eye pressure (using medications, laser or surgery), but some patients continue to lose vision despite lowering their eye pressure,” Liu said. “New treatments to prevent glaucoma are needed to prevent vision loss and preserve patients’ quality of life.”

Uproar in Delta community as trigger happy Vigilante members shoot dead 9-year-old boy, injure another
Members of the Agbarho Community Vigilante in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday allegedly shot dead a nine-year-old boy, Oghenekobiruo Peter, with another seriously injured.
THE UNIMAGINABLE gathered that the deceased was in his mother’s shop when the ugly incident occurred.
At the time of filing this report, the victim was lying lifeless in their house waiting to be buried.
There were also blood stains in front of the victim’s mother’s shop.
An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said the Vigilante in their usual tradition to announce their presence in the area shot sporadically in the air.
The eyewitness said it was in the process, the boy was hit by bullets and he died instantly.
THE UNIMAGINABLE learnt that members of the Vigilante who were involved in the incident have all been arrested by the Agbarho Police Divisional Headquarters.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR led by Comrade Prince Kehinde-Taiga has expressed displeasure at the unprofessional conducts of the Vigilante, which led to the death of the nine-year-old boy.
Taiga, who was represented by CDHR Assistant Secretary, Comrade Israel Joe spoke when they paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s family.
Joe said, “The incident has left me with some pains as the tragedy is too much for the mother.”
Joe also urged the Divisional Police Officer of the Agbarho Divisional Headquarters simply identified as CSP Nosa to transfer the suspects to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Asaba for prosecution in line with the deceased’s family decision to serve as a deterrent to others who feel they can fire arms at will.
According to Joe, “The position of the CDHR Chairman who have mandated me is, Justice for the victim and we hope it be carried out immediately.”
Contacted, the Delta State Commissioner of Police,CP Muhammad Mustafa confirmed the report.

CP Mustafa said, “Yes, the DPO reported the matter to me. I didn’t know he was nine years old.”

Plane Crashes Minutes After Take-Off with 189 on Aboard

Plane Crashes Minutes After Take-Off with 189 on Aboard

An aircraft with 189 passengers on board is believed to have sunk after crashing into the sea off Indonesia’s island of Java on Mon“

The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the capital on its way to the country’s tin-mining hub, officials said.
A spokesman for Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said the Lion Air flight, JT610, lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff, adding that a tug boat leaving the capital’s port had seen the craft falling.

“It has been confirmed that it has crashed,” the spokesman, Yusuf Latif, said by text message, when asked about the fate of the plane, which air tracking service Flightradar 24 identified as a Boeing 737 MAX 8.
Debris thought to be from the plane, including aircraft seats, was found near an offshore refining facility in the Java Sea, an official of state energy firm Pertamina said.
Wreckage had been found near where the plane lost contact with air traffic officials on the ground, said Muhmmad Syaugi, the head of the search and rescue agency said.
“We don’t know yet whether there are any survivors,” Syaugi told a news conference, adding that no distress signal had been received from the aircraft’s emergency locator transmitter.
“We hope, we pray, but we cannot confirm.”
An official of Indonesia’s safety transport committee said he could not confirm the cause of the crash.
Confirmation of the crash would have to wait until the recovery of the plane’s black boxes, as the cockpit voice recorder and data flight recorder are known.
“We will collect all data from the control tower,” said Soerjanto Tjahjono. “The plane is so modern, it transmits data from the plane and that we will review too.
”But the most important is the blackbox.”
Australia had not received signals from the plane’s emergency locator either, it told Indonesia in a reply to a query, agency chief Syaugi said.
The effort to locate the wreckage and retrieve the black boxes will represent the second major deep sea recovery challenge for Indonesian investigators.
This similar to the experience encountered after an AirAsia Airbus jet crashed into the Java Sea in December 2015.
Indonesia’s Lion Air says crashed plane was airworthy.
Under international rules, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board will automatically assist with the inquiry into Monday’s crash, backed up by technical advisers from Boeing.
Also to back them is U.S.-French engine maker CFM International, co-owned by General Electric and Safran.
Boeing is aware of the airplane accident reports and is “closely monitoring” the situation, a company spokesman told the Media.
The flight took off from Jakarta around 6.20 a.m. and was due to have landed in the capital of the Bangka-Belitung tin mining region at 7.20 a.m., the Flightradar 24 website showed.
“We cannot give any comment at this moment,” Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group, said.
He added that a news conference was planned for later on Monday. “We are trying to collect all the information and data.”
Preliminary flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the aircraft climbed to around 5,000 feet (1,524 m) before losing, and then regaining, height, before finally falling toward the sea.
It was last recorded at 3,650 feet (1,113 m).
Its speed had risen to 345 knots, according to raw data captured by the respected tracking website, which could not immediately be confirmed.
Its last recorded position was about 15 km (9 miles) north of the Indonesian coastline, according to a Google Maps reference of the last coordinates reported by Flightradar24.
The accident is the first to be reported that involves the widely-sold Boeing 737 MAX, an updated, more fuel-efficient version of the manufacturer’s workhorse single-aisle jet.
The first Boeing 737 MAX jets were introduced into service in 2017.
The very first global delivery went to Lion Air’s Malaysian subsidiary, Malindo Air.
Indonesia is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, but its safety record is patchy.
Founded in 1999, Lion Air’s only fatal accident to date was in 2004, when an MD-82 crashed upon landing at Solo City.
It killed 25 of the 163 people on board, the Flight Safety Foundation’s Aviation Safety Network says.
However, six other Lion Air jets, including one that crash-landed in the water short of the runway at the Indonesian resort island of Bali in 2013, were damaged.
They were damaged beyond repair in various accidents, according to Aviation Safety Network.
Lion Air was removed from the European Union’s air safety blacklist in June 2016.
The privately owned airline in April announced a firm order to buy 50 Boeing 737 MAX 10 narrow body jets with a list price of 6.24 billion dollars.
It is one of the U.S. planemaker’s largest customers globally.

What President Buhari and I will never do – Osinbajo
Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo has said that Nigerians will never find him and President Muhammadu Buhari deceiving Nigerians.
According to Osinbajo, the Buhari administration was concerned about the plight of ordinary Nigerians and would continue to carry out programmes that would imOsinbajo’s speech was forwarded to The unimaginable by a Senior Special Assistant to the President, (Office of the Vice President) Laolu Akande.
He said, “The focus of our government is on how things can be better for the common man.
“We are not in the business of trying to deceive Nigerians. You can accuse myself and the President of anything, but you will never find us deceiving Nigerians.”prove their lives.
Osinbajo said this on Monday when he appeared on Brekete Family, Reality Radio Talk Magazine programme on Human Rights Radio, Abuja, where he was featured.
While making references to the Buhari administration’s National Social Investment Programme (N-SIP), the VP noted that the administration is able to do so much more with less resources.
This he said was possible because, “The President has ensured that nobody steals money from the treasury. The major problem Nigeria had before now was the fact that people stole from the nation’s coffers. Once the country is able to stop corruption, it would be better.
“The first thing we did was tackle unemployment by employing young men and women through the N-Power job scheme, which has so far employed 500,000 young graduates.
“Every state has N-Power, noting that there are plans to employ more because of the number of graduates. This is a social safety net for young unemployed Nigerian graduates.
“So far, we have given about 400,000 MarketMoni loans, but the target is to give 1 million loans to artisans and traders, while TraderMoni loans is a N10,000 interest-free loans to petty traders, of which 2 million are expected to be reached in the first phase.”
He also highlighted the Federal Government’s Energizing Economies Initiative, which provides clean, affordable, and constant power to economic clusters such as big markets and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria.
“Last week Friday, the Vice President commissioned the Sura market Independent Power Project in Sura shopping complex in Lagos State; a 1.5MW independent mini-grid power supply system to provide clean and affordable electricity to over 1,000 shops in the market.
“The Buhari administration’s Energizing Economies Initiative, which is being implemented by Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is designed to provide clean, stable and affordable electricity to Nigerians in these economic clusters. So far, thousand of shops in Sabon Gari in Kano State, Ariaria market in Aba, Isinkan market in Akure, Ondo State, Edaiken market in Benin, Edo State, and Sura market, Lagos, have been provided solar power through the initiative.
“Power is a major problem in Nigeria and our efforts is to solve this through alternative energy such as solar power. We are not relying on the national grid alone. We are also encouraging the private sector to provide power.
“The new strategy of the government is to put power in different places so as to make life easy for Nigerians without relying on the national grid. We are still working on the national grid. This country is very big, that’s why we have to decentralize,” Prof. Osinbajo said.
Speaking further on the benefits of the N-SIP, the Vice President assured Nigerians that the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme was authentic and was a major part of the administration’s plan to improve lives of Nigerians.
“Currently, it feeds daily over 9 million schoolchildren in public primary schools in 26 states. Also, the products are sourced from local farmers, which improve local economy,” he said.
Prof. Osinbajo further stated the administration’s commitment to developing the Niger Delta region and how its engagement has helped to maintain peace and stability in the region, which has also improved oil production and the country’s revenue.

Bishop Oyedepo reveals sponsors of killer herdsmen
The Bishop of Living Faith Church (aka Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, yesterday said the inability of the government to arrest killer herdsmen in some part of the Middle Belt zone was because the killers were agents of the government.
Speaking in Ota, Ogun State, at the Church’s Sunday Service titled ‘Covenant Day of Settlement and Thanksgiving’, the clergyman stated that it was absurd for the government to fail in arresting some self-confessed killer herders in Jos, Plateau State.
Oyedepo said: “Help me ask them how many mosques have been destroyed by these people? You can also ask them how many of those who have destroyed the church has ever been caught? How many of the destroyed churches has government ever added a dime to rebuild?
“I have said it, let us remove the mask from the masquerade and nobody will fear it anymore. Government is part of this thing; you don’t need to go to school to know that.
“If people claimed responsibilities to the killings in Jos and were not arrested, the question is who is to arrest them? Is it the citizens or government? It’s the government, but they cannot arrest them because they are their agents.”
While stating that every leader is a caretaker and God remains the creator and owner of every nation, including Nigeria, he added that Nigeria would have peace when they understand that God is in control of everything, including the land.
“When a caretaker starts behaving like a landlord he will be removed. God is the permanent landlord of the earth.
“Too many arrogant foes who pose to own this nation, be warned because the day of God’s judgement is here.
“Those who sponsor and perpetrate killings and also offer covering for killers to keep killing, God will lead them to rest. God will give us peace in this country by all means.
“God enthrones kings and removes kings,” he said.

APC attacks Obasanjo, Atiku

3:30:00 pm
APC attacks Obasanjo, Atiku
The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has lambasted former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking through its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, APC said their new alliance will fall like a pack of cards before President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general election.
The party stated that the former president’s description of Atiku as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to lead the nation was enough testimonial to the unsuitability of his former Vice.
This was contained in a statement Nabena issued on Sunday in Abuja.
The statement read, “Throughout their second tenure in office, (2003-2007) and until last fortnight, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had described Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership.
“Only recently, Obasanjo vowed that God would not forgive him if he supported the Presidential aspiration of Atiku as ‘it would amount to handing Nigeria over to sharks and looters.
“It is this tendency towards indecision, insincerity, double talk and deception that has made Nigeria ridiculed in the eyes of the international community.
“A statesman is known for his principles and his statements are based on the strength of his convictions.
“When a supposed national leader makes declarations that are subject to change at any time based on his mood, such a leader loses his integrity and reliability.”
Nabena further described PDP’s 2019 vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as double-faced and pretentious.
“Nigerians cannot be deceived, we have seen them all – Presidential Library, Bells and American University of Nigeria, Breweries and Shopping Malls, all established with largely public funds but privately owned by public officers,” he added.
Nabena said that as a former military head of state and Petroleum minister, Buhari made no attempt to acquire an oil well, private jet or estates in Nigeria and abroad.
“Muhammadu Buhari is definitely different from the double-faced candidates seeking election,” the statement said.

Buhari qualified by law to contest – Ajulo

3:27:00 pm
Buhari qualified by law to contest – Ajulo
Dr Kayode Ajulo, an Abuja-based legal luminary and former National Secretary of the Labour Party has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is qualified by law to contest the 2019 presidential election.
Ajulo reacting to the controversy surrounding the WAEC certificate of the president, said that for qualifications for elective position, the Nigerian Constitution recognises primary Six Leaving Certificate and Public/Corporate Service Experience as School Certificate Equivalents.
Ajulo told NAN in Lagos on Sunday that the controversy and arguments over the president’s certificate were far-fetched as he meets all legal requirements to contest.
He noted that while the President may or may not win re-election bid on other grounds, the question of certification and the position of the law on it is that he is qualified.
He said that the constitution empowers INEC to accept any proof of 10 years previous employment as equivalent of School Certificate from any presidential candidate to contest.
“Patently for lack of knowledge of the Constitution, most people do not know what the Constitution provides as equivalents of School Certificates because they are hidden in the Interpretation of the material Section as PART IV, Section 318.
“It states that one does not even require any certificate to be President of Nigeria.
“The academic qualifications or suitability of Nigeria’s incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari has been one of the scathing issues that have engulfed the space, particularly the media, wherein the issue has received exponential attention and review.
“In 2015, the same certificate question was raised and was highly controverted. It became a near albatross to the presidential ambition of President Buhari.
“Even now that the president seeks re-election, the ghost of the certificate question that resurrected to hunt itself has continued to generate endless controversies.
“Section 131 (d) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) has been cited in support of the contention by proponents of that view to support their position.
“The said Section (Section 131) provides: a person shall be qualified for election to the Office of President if- (d) he has been educated up to at least school certificate level or its equivalent.
“Section 177 (d) prescribes that candidates contesting election into the office of State Governor must have been educated up to at least School Certificate Level or its equivalent. By virtue of Sections 142 (2) and 187 (2), the provisions on educational qualification of President and State Governors also apply to the Offices of Vice President and Deputy Governors, respectively.
“Sections 65 (2) (a) and 106 (c) of the Constitution prescribe that candidates contesting elections as National Assembly and State House of Assembly members, respectively, must also have been educated to at least School Certificate Level.”
According to Ajulo, in Section 318, “School Certificate or its equivalent” means:(a) a Secondary School Certificate, or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate, the City and Guilds Certificate; or (b) education up to Secondary School Certificate level; or (c) Primary Six School Leaving Certificate or its equivalent and –(i) service in the public or private sector in the Federation in any capacity acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission for a minimum of 10 years.
“Also (ii) attendance at courses and training in such institutions as may be acceptable to the INEC for periods totalling up to a minimum of one year, and (iii) the ability to read, write, understand and communicate in the English language to the satisfaction of the electoral commission, and
“(d) any other qualification acceptable by INEC. This means INEC has also been empowered by the Constitution to accept any piece of employment paper as School Certificate equivalent to be President of Nigeria.
“The provision of Section 318 (1) was construed by the Court of Appeal in the case of BAYO v. NJIDDA (2004) 8 NWLR (Pt. 876) page 544 at 629H-630D, where Ogbuagu, J.C.A (as he then was) held: the above provisions, are conjunctive and they qualify or mean “school certificate or its equivalent.
“Therefore, if any one of them is not present/available, then, the candidate is out. Even if (i), (ii), (iii) and (d) are accepable by or satisfactory to INEC and therefore, cannot be questioned in a tribunal as being final, the absence of (c), also disqualifies the candidate
“It is the duty that lawyers must take on to educate the society of the truth,” he added.

I apply ‘love charm’ on my manhood to win my wife back – Man tells court

A trader, Raimotu Jubril, on Friday appealed to an Orile Agege Customary Court to dissolve her 24-year-old marriage to Taiwo for alleged fetishness.
“My husband is fetish, he robs his male organ with a substance whenever he wanted to make love to me,’’ Raimotu, 41, said.
Raimotu, of 45 Adealu Street, Orile Agege, a suburb of Lagos, said that it was when she complained and insisted that her husband stopped using the substance.
“He beats me at will and does not allow me to go out, neither did he allowed my family to visit me, it was as if I was in prison while in his house.
“He comes home late at night and would not tell me his where about. I left his house since 2009 and I want a divorce,’’ she said.
The mother of three told the court that her husband was a womaniser and he had married another wife.
Taiwo, 44, a mechanic, who lives at 1, Ilepa Eniola Street, Iyana Ipaja denied being fetish.
“My wife denied me sex for one and half year and because of this, I did a love charm to win her back.
“The love charm was the substance I used to rob my male organ whenever I want to have sex with her.
“I am not a womaniser, it was her non-challant altitude that led me into the arm of another woman,’’ Taiwo said.
He told the court that he still want his wife back and beg for his wife return.
The court President, Dr Kayode Whenu, told the couple to maintain the peace, and adjourned the case till April 5 for further hearing.

She Starves me of Sex, He Beats Me Everyday … Couple Tells Court

Mrs Temitope Salaudeen has told an Orile-Agege Customary Court that her husband constantly raped and beat her up, and also prayed  for her 10-year-old marriage to be dissolved.
The petitioner, Mrs Temitope Salaudeen, 32, a trader, who resides at 2, CAC St., Agege, a suburb of Lagos, pleaded with the court to dissolve her marriage over alleged rape, battery and threat to her life.
She told the court that her husband is a wife beater and treats her like a slave. “My husband rapes me anytime he feels like having sex and does not care about my feelings or my emotions. He sold some of my jewelries without my consent and steals my money at will,” she added.
Temitope said that the greatest mistake she had made in life was getting married to her husband Alilu Saludeen. “I ran away from the house sometime in November 2015 with my children because if I continue living with him, he might beat me to death one day,” she said.
The mother of two, aged 3 and 6 years, pleaded with the court to dissolve the union and grant her custody of her children.
However, her husband, Alilu, 39, a building contractor, denied all the allegations. “I have not beaten her before, she starved me of sex for one and half years despite the fact that we were living in the same house. “She hides her phone from me and I did not sell her jewelries neither did I steal her money,” he said.
He told the court that he was still in love with his wife and not ready for dissolution of the marriage. The Court President, Dr Kayode Whenu told the couple to maintain the peace and adjourned the case till Feb. 23 for further hearing.

14 Powerful Ladies Who Need Love

These ladies are paragons of beauty, wielders of power and they exert influence. There is no doubt that they are good at what they do. They also love their vocations and excel in ways that have stamped distinct spheres of influence on their personalities. Even though they radiate love, their hearts yearn for love. Afterall, what good is love that no one shares? In this season of love, Nseobong Okon-Ekong and Vanessa Obiohatake a peep into the world of these powerful and beautiful ladies

Mo Abudu: Married to Her Work
    Mo Abudu
Lately, everyone has been talking about the movie ‘Fifty’, a piece of work which has Mosunmola Abudu, better known as Mo Abudu, as executive director. Movie production is her latest venture and for those who know this proud Nigerian woman who has the enviable reputation of being the first woman to own a television network in Africa (a distinction she acquired when she established Ebonylife Television), the big move from television to movies was not a surprise. Mo is used to going all the way with whatever she chooses. In a short space of time, Mo has packed in so much more than many are able to achieve in a lifetime. As a Human Resources professional, she moved quickly from paid employment to become her own boss. Switching to a show host, TV producer, media personality, entrepreneur and philanthropist, she exhibited no less a keen enthusiasm. Her move up the ladder of success is so fast that many are unable to catch up with her before she reaches the next rung. Mo got married in her mid-twenties to Tokunbo Abudu, a lawyer and the union produced two children. Since the collapse of that relationship, Mo has not been romantically linked to any man. She frequently appears in public alone. Now in her early 50s, she appears to have completely thrown herself into her work, conceptualizing and developing one project after another. The assumption in many quarters is that she is now married to her work and has become so busy that she hardly has time to engage in matters of the heart. However, everyone longs to know if there is a man who can make Mo’s heart skip a beat.

    Gbemi Saraki: Still Daddy’s Girl.
    Gbemi Saraki
While many may argue that Gbemisola Ruqayyah Saraki has not struggled for anything in life, relying largely on the stupendous wealth and goodwill of her father, she must be given the credit for having the verve to break out on her own. Nothing best demonstrates her inclination to call the shots as the willingness to leave her comfort zone for the slippery terrain of Nigerian politics. Working mainly in the finance sector since her graduation from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, Gbemi as she is called by friends deliberately sought financial independence away from the family fortune. Her venture into politics was akin to throwing her into rough waters where she would require more than the expertise of her father to navigate her way to safety. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 1999 to represent Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency, Four years later, she became a senator, elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party to represent Central Senatorial District of Kwara State. She was reelected in 2007. One apparent area that Gbemi is floundering is with her love life. The question on many lips is, ‘will Gbemi fall in love again?’ Once married to Segun Fowora, she has kept her distance from men, since the collapse of the marriage, preferring to shower all her love on her three children.

Stella Oduah: She Goes for the Big Game.
    Stella Oduah
Not a few people think, Stella Oduah, a senator from Anambra State dropped into the Nigerian political space from nowhere and created a huge sphere of influence. However, those who are close to the petroleum industry know that she is not a fresh face. Returning from the United States of America in the 1980s with degrees in accounting and business administration, she got a job with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation. A very ambitious woman, she quit after close to a decade to establish her own enterprise- Sea Petroleum and Gas Company Limited (SPG), an independent marketer of petroleum products. Born into royalty, Stella is not used to half measures or tiny dots. She goes for the game. Therefore, she did not tiptoe into the political arena. Beginning as Director of Administration and

Finance for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s political campaign, she introduced her own initiative, a personto- person campaign strategy that did not go unnoticed. Stella was believed to be instrumental to her former husband, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi’s appointment as Minister of Works. Many believe that politics put a strain on their marriage and led to its collapse. To demonstrate her immense influence in the Jonathan administration, her husband’s loss became her gain as she was appointed minister of Aviation. Although she suffered a hiccup in her political career after she was removed from the cabinet over bulletproof car purchase saga, she bounced back as her a senator. What is not known, however, is whether Stella’s heart yearns for love with the same passion as it yearns for power.

    Bianca Ojukwu: Truncated Love Song
    Bianca Ojukwu
A love song was truncated the day the Biafran warlord Chukwuemeka Odimegwu-Ojukwu went on a final exile to the great beyond in 2011. His death left a big void in the heart of his wife, Bianca. Since his exit, the former beauty queen has vowed never to get herself involved with matters of the heart. Her resolve revolves round her ideology of the concept of marriage, one which surpasses that of procreation. The former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain believes that she has paid her dues by spending 23 years of life with a man who equally loved and adored her. Their marriage made a spectacle in the media in the 1990s due to the gaping age difference. Yet Bianca would have no man love her the way her late husband did. Having thrown her admirers off balance by her resolute decision to remain widowed, the pressure to see her remarry has not dwindled a bit. Greatly revered by her late husband’s followers, Bianca still commands beauty that will make a man’s blood run hot. How long will her resolve wade off the pressure from men?

Funke Adedoyin: Who is the Lucky Guy?
    Funke Adedoyin
Marriage is not one of the strong points of the princess and daughter of the foremost industrialist Samuel Adedoyin. A trained pharmacist, the House of Representatives member from Kwara hardly broaches the subject of marriage and when asked about her worrisome marital status, she simply gives an automated response that she is in a good relationship but hardly discloses the lucky guy. To be sure, Funke is blessed with good looks and an intellectual mind. She has served the country twice as a minister during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. Although, hardly romantically linked with any man, Funke has a son for the ex-husband of Senator Gbemisola Saraki, Segun Fowora. She was one time speculated to have an affair with a younger guy but the affair never saw the light of the day. For now, all her passion is directed to her political ambition and of course her son.

Yemi Adamolekun: Surrounded by Men, but None to Love.
    Yemi Adamolekun
Young, vibrant, and intelligent, Yemi has what it takes to make any man happy. The Nigerian born social media activist is known for her active contributions towards galvanising Nigerian youths to take a leadership role. Having been instilled with selfbelieve at an early age by her parents, the young lady portrays a true sense of leadership in her career with her advocacy platform Enough-is-Enough which allows youths to speak their minds about the leadership of the country. With the wheel of family fortune spinning in her favour and a profile which is increasingly becoming a nightmare to Nigerian politicians, Adamolekun is yet to understand the principles of love. Although surrounded by male counterparts who share in her vision, it is hard to link her romantically with any of them. She is single and leading an army of young leaders with her singular platform.

Ayo Obe: Remarriage not on the card
    Ayo Obe
Always on top of burning issues about the economy, particularly bordering on rights of women and children, legal practitioner, Ayo Obe demonstrates an uncommon zest. The 61 year-old woman has an enviable career as a writer and leader in several arms of government in different administrations. Armed with a subtle beauty and outspokenness, the dual citizen of Nigeria and Britain is quite unlucky when it comes to the dealings of the heart. Not even her board room intelligence or legal prowess has enticed her again to the institution of marriage, after a previous failed union. Obe however takes solace in her only daughter from that obvious unlucky affair.

Saratu Umar: No love All round
    Saratu Umar
The northern beauty queen has not made a good ride of her political opportunties. Her sojourn in the corridors of power has yielded undesirable fruits. Twice she has found herself in top positions at key organisations of the economy, on both occasions she had running battles with staff. First, it was at the Nigerian Export and Import Bank, NEXIM where her colleagues and subordinates daily lamented about her behaviour. The Jonathan Goodluck administration saw her occupying another lofty position as the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, NIPC. Unfortunately, again, she was unceremoniously shown the way out before the end of the ex- President’s tenure. For this beautiful lady, it appears she cannot seem to find love everywhere she turns, whether at home or at work.

Udy Umondak: is love the Missing factor?
    Udy Umondak
Uduak Abasi Umondak, better known as, Udy was the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State. Her claim to fame, however, is a combination of factors. One, she had a glittering role in ‘Mirror in the Sun’, a famous soap on Nigerian television. She also owned the upscale fashion house, Colours. Years ago, Udy returned to television with a faith-based talk show, ‘His Word Made Flesh’ which was rested after a five year run. Currently, she has a new self-styled information and education packed show, ‘The Udy Factor’. The funky grandmother who still looks stunning in her late 50s has become very passionate about her Christian faith, but she confessed that this has not dissuaded the stream of men trying to court her. So far, she has not given anyone a green light, insisting God would tell her when the right man comes along.

Deola Sagoe: looking for a Heart to Stitch
    Deola Sagoe
Daughter of the outstanding Nigerian businessman, Chief Ade Ojo, Deola Sagoe, a fashion designer, has taken the world by storm. Through her work, she helped to open the door for the increasing acceptance of Nigerian fashion designers on many international platforms. Although she is skilled in cutting fabrics and stitching them together to produce colourful designs, Deola could not hold together torn fabric of the relationship with her former husband, Kofi Sagoe. They had to go their separate ways with their three daughters as evidence of a once happy union which went sour. Chances are that Deola may be willing to make loads of sacrifice to stitch the heart of any man who is mutually drawn to hers, so that both hearts can beat together as one again.

Arunma Oteh: Not a first Class love.
    Arunma Oteh
Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank and former Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Arunma Oteh, earned a first class honours degree in Computer Science from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka. She also obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. For all disposition to industry and scholarship, Abia State-born Arunma has not been able to rake in a brilliant result in the romantic relationship department. Is there a man out there who can match her first class brain and is willing to take her on a course in Romantic Relationship, beginning with Love 101?

    Aisha Abubakar: very lonely Heart.
    Aisha Abubakar
Daughter of the influential top Nigerian civil servant, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, Aisha Abubakar who now serves the Muhammadu Buhari administration as Minister of State in the Ministry of Trade was one of those who had a very challenging crossing the ministerial screening hurdle on account of a couple of petitions against her nomination, but she surmounted them all in the end. However, Mother luck is yet to visit her with similar good fortune when it comes to having a male shoulder she can lean on since she separated from her husband whom she had three children for. Another Valentine Day is here, but with a new responsibility on her shoulders as a minister of the federal republic, all Aisha probably has on her mind now are matters of the state only.

Amina Mohammed: The future looks foreign.
    Amina Mohammed
One of Nigeria’s few women of influence whose reputation for excellence goes across the globe, Amina J. Mohammed, Minister of Environment is very highly respected. Starting as Founder and CEO of the Centre for Development Policy Solutions, while also serving as an Adjunct Professor for the Master’s in Development Practice program at Columbia University, she worked her to serve as the Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Her services and knowledge are so much in demand that succeeding Nigerian presidents have never stopped to consider her gender, state or ethnic group, giving the privilege to serve the nation consistently. If Amina, who at a time was referred to as Amina Zubair, has a man in her life, she has been very discrete and the man has been satisfied with staying in the background and not stepping into the public space at all with her. The understanding by many is that Amina is likely to be swept off her feet in love with a non-Nigerian given the background of her interaction with the international community. Everyone is eagerly waiting to see which country flag will fly beside Nigeria’s at Amina’s wedding.

Hajia Bola Shagaya: is it Yes or No?
    Hajia Bola Shagaya
When her husband, Alhaji Ganiyu Shagaya din’t play any conspicous role at their son’s recent wedding, not a few tongues started wagging expressing concern that Hajia Bola Shagaya’s marriage which is blessed with four children may be over after all. The Kwara State-born influential businesswoman who is very connected to the high and the mighty has neither refuted nor confirmed these insinuations, which is further fuelled by the fact that she frequently appears in public alone these days. Another season of love is around, and this diamond loving fashion enthusiast and highly influential businesswoman who always find her way into the hearts of Nigeria’s first ladies, may find favour with cupid.
