No fewer than two people lost their lives, and several others injured after multiple auto crashes in Lagos and Ogun states on Saturday.
Around 11am, a suction truck moving inward Ikeja, Lagos, lost control and collided with a Mercedes Benz and a Land Rover, killing a man, identified simply as Muraino.
Another crash occurred around same time at the tollgate area in Ogun, after a white Iveco truck rammed into three other vehicles and two motorcycles, killing a yet-to-be identified woman.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Michael Akindele, said a passenger in the vehicle who was injured was taken Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, while other drivers involved in the incident escaped unhurt.
He said, “The suction truck was moving inward Ikeja along Obafemi Awolowo Way, opposite the Lagos State Secretariat Complex, when it lost control due to brake failure. It skidded to the other lane of the secretariat entrance and collided with a Mercedes 4matic with registration number, FST 161 BZ, and a Land Rover, with number plate, EKY 93 DV, at about 10.34am.”
It was learnt that officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and policemen from the Alausa division, responded to the emergency.
In the Ogun accident involving six automobiles,SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the driver of the truck that allegedly caused the accident survived and was arrested by policemen from the Sango Police Command.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ota Unit Command, were said to have cleared the debris from the road.
The Ota Unit Commander, Leye Adegboyega, said, “The fatal crash occurred at about 11am at tollgate along the Ota-Abeokuta Expressway. A white Iveco truck, with number plate, AAA 256 XP, coming from Ilo-Awela Road with high speed had a brake failure and rammed into three other vehicles (a Nissan car, JJJ 359CK; a Toyota Sienna, KRD 59AAA; and a Volkswagen bus, AAA884XN) and two motorcycles (Bajaj, FST 103 QD and another Bajaj, ABQ 142WX) along Ota-Abeokuta Road. One person, a female was killed and two people were injured as a result of the crash. The injured victims were taken to Lead Way Hospital, Ota, while the dead body was deposited at the general hospital morgue, Ota.”
