Last month, Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview build 11082 for PCs, its first to emerge from the Redstone development branch. Today, it's launching its first new PC preview build of the year for Insiders on the Fast ring.
Windows 10 Insider Preview build 11099 is rolling out now, and as with 11082,Microsoft's Gabe Aul said that it "does not include big noticeable changes or new features". He explained:
Our focus through the holidays was on structural improvements to OneCore, which is the shared core of Windows across devices. The code refactoring and other engineering work we’ve been doing to optimize OneCore is nearing the point where we will be ready for teams to begin checking in new features and improvements.
Notably, he also pointed out that "it will still be a few builds before any really noticeable changes show up".
However, you may recall that Gabe said at the end of last year that Insiders could look forward to more regular preview releases for those on the Fast ring - a commitment that he reiterated today, along with a further note of caution:
The criteria we use to release builds to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring will be much closer to our criteria for flighting to our internal rings. This will allow more builds to reach Windows Insider. This also means that the builds we release to the Fast ring may include more bugs and other issues that could be slightly more painful for some people to live with.
If you're not prepared to deal with these additional bugs and issues, you should get out of the Fast lane, and switch to the Slow ring instead, for more stable preview builds.
By the way, there's one very welcome fix in build 11099 that will no doubt be welcomed by users of the previous build: "the progress dialog when copying or deleting files via File Explorer now shows up as expected."
