Man arraigned for assault, stealing

A 20-year-old man, Taiwo Salaudeen, was on Thursday put in the dock in Lagos for allegedly stealing a cellular phone valued at N56,000. Salaudeen is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, ‎stealing, unlawful damage and assault at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.‎ ‎‎ The prosecutor, Mrs Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused and others now at large committed the offences on Eric Moore Road at about 9 p.m. on Nov. 5. Osayande, a sergeant, said the accused and his accomplices saw the phone fall off her bag and picked it. “When she accosted them, they ‎broke the phone in her presence, pushed and dragged her on the floor,’’ she said. ‎ She said that the offence contravened the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.‎‎ ‎ The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum. ‎ Nwachukwu said the surety should provide evidence of tax payments with a verified address.‎ ‎ She adjourned the case till Dec. 13.
